MOTHERLODE
New versions of things from the past are not always good representations of that era, but once in a while people just plain get it right. Motherlode is bringing back 70’s soundtrack funk with a mix of Afrobeat. The Arcata-based band is not an artificial, homogenized version of the past. This explosive nine-piece funk extravaganza is as real as it gets. The band is very heavily influenced by James Brown and The JB’s, Herbie Hancock, as well as more contemporary funk artists like Galactic, Greyboy Allstars and Soulive. A number of individuals in this group can be seen around town in other roles, which makes their musicianship even more impressive. Their sound can be distinguished from an array of others because of how tight this band is. By just watching them play, one gets the impression that there are some complex logistics going on just to make such a well-oiled machine churn away as they do. I had a chance to sit down with Pete from Motherlode and talk about motivation, friendship and the pursuit of happiness.
BILL SUMMERS
Bill Summers (b. June 27, 1948) is a New Orleans based Afro-Cuban jazz/Latin jazz percussionist, a multi-instrumentalist who plays primarily on conga drums. Summers is probably most well known due to his work with Los Hombres Calientes along with his friend and co-leader of the group, trumpeter Irvin Mayfield. However, despite this musical relationship, Summers has a much longer musical career than that, often working behind the scenes on film scores for various movies such as The Color Purple and the television miniseries Roots with Quincy Jones. He also played with Herbie Hancock during The Headhunters years, and is mentioned in passing by the liner notes of The Headhunters' 2003 release Evolution Revolution as contributing to that recording. His former wife is Yvette Bostic-Summers, who often sings on Los Hombres' albums.
DJ LOGIC
American turntablist[1] active primarily in nu-jazz/acid jazz and with jam bands.
Kibler was born and raised in The Bronx. An early interest in hip hop led to his using the turntables, practicing often. Kibler was also interested in funk and jazz music, and began collaborating with various musicians. His own recordings are perhaps best described as contemporary soul jazz with a strong hip hop feel.
Kibler tours often with his own group, Project Logic, and has recorded or performed with Vernon Reid, moe., John Mayer, Medeski Martin & Wood, Bob Belden, Jack Johnson, Chris Whitley, Uri Caine, Christian McBride and others. On April 6, 2006, Kibler sat in with Bob Weir's Ratdog, adding his style to the famous Grateful Dead song combo "China Cat Sunflower/I Know You Rider". He is a founding member of The John Popper Project. On August 15, 2009, Kibler sat in with O.A.R. at Madison Square Garden, adding his style to their latest single "This Town".
His mentor was Vernon Reid, and the twosome recorded and toured occasionally as the Yohimbe Brothers with various guests. Kibler has appeared on studio and live performances with Reid's solo projects, and Reid also did a guest solo on one track from Kibler's original band, Eye and I, which also featured D.K. Dyson and Melvin Gibbs, the latter of which has played on all of the DJ Logic solo releases as well.

Motherlode is a fantastic nine piece funk / Afrobeat act from Arcata, CA, influenced by luminaries such as James Brown and the JB's and Fela Kuti, as well as contemporary artists like Galactic and the Greyboy All Stars. Motherlode at the Jambalaya Arcata.

He has performed with Widespread Panic, John Mayer, Bob Weir's Ratdog, Jack Johnson, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Warren Haynes, Medeski Martin & Wood, moe., OAR, Vernon Reid and more.
