DUANE ALLMAN was undoubtedly one of the most influential guitar players of the classic rock era. He died just as his career was entering the stratosphere, but his legacy lives on in the form of his namesake band—which celebrated its 40th anniversary this year—and in the licks of countless disciples. Many of the most devoted are part of the thriving jam-band scene Allman helped pioneer. Plenty of them live in and around San Francisco, where GP is proud to present a birthday tribute at the house John Lee Hooker built—the Boom Boom Room. [Allman’s actual birthday is November 20th, but in order to include our special secret Allstar guest, it was best to set up this tribute performance on December 2nd.]

“Playing electric slide guitar in the style of Duane Allman consumed a few years of my life,” says Simon Kurth, who is much better known as Eli Jebidiah from the “high octane hootenanny” ensemble Poor Man’s Whiskey. “I have played every cut off of Duane Allman: An Anthology at some point, whether is was in my old Allman Brothers tribute band, or in Poor Man’s Whiskey. I'd be happy to share the stories behind some of the tunes that mark the milestones of his career, including some of the killer sessions he did with other legends such as Eric Clapton and Aretha Franklin.”

Duane Allman is one of my primary influences, and the Allman Brothers Band is the ultimate example of musicians working together as a collective,” says Sean Leahy, who has shared countless stages with acts such as Tea Leaf Green, ALO, and Four Year Bender. Leahy teaches rock band classes at the renowned Blue Bear School of Music on Wednesday nights. He and a crew of students will be dropping by after class to join the fun.

JEFF MILLER from New Monsoon will be featured on second guitar throughout most of the evening, which means he’ll be playing the Dickey Betts role during Allman Brothers tunes. “Betts’s birthday is December 12th, so we’ll be sure to raise a glass in his honor as well,” says Miller.

Rounding out the extraordinary band will be GP contributor JIMMY LESLIE, drummer CHRIS DEJOHN (Eric Lindell Band), bassman MARK ANTHONY CALDERON (Zigaboo Modeliste, Tracorum, Free Peoples), and Poor Man’s Whiskey’s JOSH BROUGH on keys and vocals.

Come celebrate the timeless music of the man who cast the blueprint for Southern rock. Speaking of which, if you’re planning on hitting the Black Crowes show at the Fillmore, make sure to stop by for a night cap or three. This tribute show for the ages will run until the early morning.
